The Wells Fargo Sound and Light show runs from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day. The nightly shows start a half-hour after sundown at approximately 9:30pm at Falls Park, weather permitting. What should we know about the Falls?
The Falls were actually not man made like many people think. During the last ice age, 14,000 years ago, the Falls were formed by a glacier. The Big Sioux River encircles our city and is flowing North at Falls Park. In the winter the Falls can completely freeze depending on the amount of water that is flowing through the park. The Falls of the Big Sioux River do not feed from another lake or river, yet run off from a collection of small amounts of water and runoff in Northern South Dakota. Because the Falls run through the city amongst many residential areas, the city constructed a man-made diversion in the Northern part of Sioux Falls in case flooding may be of concern. Pink quartzite rock can be found throughout the park and is local to the area. The rock has been quarried and used for building facades throughout Sioux Falls and also for road construction.
